This may be old news to some but it was news to me, so I’m sharing. If you’re looking to unload your AT&T iphone because you upgraded to the iPhone 5 or maybe you scored an iPhone because someone upgraded, AT&T has made it super easy to unlock the phone so it can work on any carrier. Rather than trolling through countless Google searches looking for the best jailbreaking software, just call AT&T support at (800) 331-0500. They are going to ask you for the IMEI number which can be found if you go to Settings>General>About and scroll down.
Literally, it took a matter of seconds for the customer rep to say the request had been sent. After I hung up, I hooked the phone up to the computer and went to iTunes. Once there, because I’m on a mac I had to hover the cursor over the device name in the sidebar and hit control and enter in order to see the option “restore from backup.” PC users can just right-click.
In order for the phone to unlock, you will need to have a SIM card already in the phone. Prior to making the call, I had went to a TMoble store and they put a mini SD card into the phone and made the number live. I already have service with them.
After I did the “restore from backup” it was a little hinky at first, the No Service message appeared but after 10 minutes or so, the TMobile bars appeared. For the most part, it’s fine, certain apps though have been updating for hours though.
